Facundus

Facundus
(sixth century)
   Bishop and Heretic.
Facundus was Bishop of Hermiane in North Africa. He supported the theological views of ibas, theodore of mopsuestia and theodoret as expressed in the ‘Three Chapters’. In an attempt to conciliate the Monophysites, these had been condemned by the Emperor justinian as being too sympathetic to the opinions of nestorius. Facundus justified himself in three treatises including the Epistola Fidei Catholicae in Defensione Trium Capitolorum. Nevertheless at the Fifth General Council (the Second Council of Constantinople) in 553, the ‘Three Chapters’ were condemned and in consequence Facundus was excommunicated by Pope Vigilius.
